IC Information
Canon: Free!
Gender: Male
Age: 20
History: Nagisa
Personality: Nagisa is a very light hearted, enthusiastic character with an adventurous streak and a sweet tooth. He's straight forward and persistent, which we see in his interactions with Rei when he pursues him for the team and in his insistence on calling Kou Gou.
When his parents want him to quit the swim team because of his grades, we see that he tends to react using emotions rather than logic. He doesn't think to approach his parents and strike up a deal, he immediately feels like he will be over ridden and his only option is to run away. He wants to swim with Haru again (and he likes the connection to penguins Iwatobi has) so he makes sure he goes to the same school. He wants Rei to join the team, so he pursues him relentlessly until he says yes. He doesn't stop to think of the consequences of his actions, he does the things because he wants to do them. In that way, he's sort of a hedonist. This can make him clumsy in his dealings with other people, because while he has no malicious intent, he doesn't seem to think things through.
Because of his over dramatic nature, people can sometimes take his genuine distress or sadness as an over reaction. His friends and family can easily read him, but casual acquaintances can sometimes dismiss his more negative emotions which can cause some frustration.
Nagisa's big personality does help to motivate his friends. We see that Haru, who loves swimming and the water, is largely apathetic about things and would never have initiated any sort of club without Nagisa's push. Makoto probably wouldn't have either, being content to go along with and looking after Haru. Rei wouldn't have joined the club at all. Nagisa doesn't make his friends who they are, but by his sheer enthusiasm and lust for life pushes his friends to be more than they are without him.
His personality can be a bit abrasive. He's childish and comes with those negative personality traits: he's selfish, loud, he doesn't think, dramatic, impulsive with poor self control. He's also a bit of a mischievous trouble maker who thrives on excitement and will instigate minor trouble if he thinks it'll be amusing. His anger can be intense, though it is quick to fizzle out and he generally remains grudgless. He's a very polarizing person; you either see his negative character traits and hate him, or see past those negative traits to the amazing person he is.
Powers/Abilities: He isn't capable of anything superhuman but he is physically fit and specializes in the breaststroke.
Keepsakes/Mementos: A penguin plush, Rei's Iwatobi jacket, a butterfly charm that had belonged to Rei, his pink phone
Sample:
Nagisa had tried to be the rock for everyone after Rin died, and he succeeded as much as it was possible to succeed in that situation, he thought, but he was hoping not to have to do it again for at least another 40 years. Makoto was busy with Haru who had taken the death especially hard, which left Nagisa to bring Gou take out and call everyone and set up the private memorial service at the swim club. His generally sunny disposition helped prevent the others from falling too deep into despair, which he knew Rin would have appreciated had he been alive for his...well, death. It was a situation that had been difficult, but not impossible, to navigate, and Nagisa had been guiltily relieved when life started returning back to normal, as it always eventually does. Except Haru died, and it started all over again. Losing another friend so soon took it’s toll on everyone, of course, but Makoto was the worst. He ate only when prompted, spent most of his days lying on the couch in the dark or staring out the window, then soon lost his job. Not that he worried about it, of course, he hadn’t even answered the call; Nagisa had heard the message as he was going through Makoto’s voice mail. It was draining emotionally, and there were days when he thought about skipping his trip to Makoto’s house before the guilt moved his feet. It felt like he was grieving for two people (well, three, but the grief over Rin had settled to an occasional pang), and he wasn’t sure how much longer he could continue before he had to give up and leave Makoto to his family.
As it happened, it wasn’t much longer at all, because Rei had his heart attack and suddenly taking care of Makoto was no longer on Nagisa’s list of priorities. The only thing he could think of was getting out of there and leaving town, because he knew that the shock and the sadness that was creeping into their dwindling group would infect him. He spent the day after the funeral going through Rei’s belongings, picking out the few things he wanted to take with him and giving away or donating the rest. He said goodbye to Makoto, was only mildly surprised when the guilt he felt was a twinge that disappeared almost instantly, and headed for the airport. He spent the next few months doing nothing but traveling to places he knew Rei would find beautiful. He occasionally sent postcards to Gou, but had changed his number and refused to phone them. He needed the time away to clear his head, to properly grieve Haru and Rei, to figure out what he was going to do now.
He noticed the fever a few hours after landing in Paris. Plane crud was an inevitability while traveling, especially when one traveled as much as Nagisa had been doing and he knew some tea and a good night’s sleep would get him back in working order. The nausea and diarrhea started at 4:48 in the morning, and he spent a good portion of the next few hours in the bathroom. He cursed whatever it was that had given him food poisoning, spending the rest of his first day in Paris racing between the bed and the bathroom. By 7 at night he noticed that he kept forgetting and then remembering Rei was dead. His mind couldn’t seem to decide what was real, what order things had happened, or even how long he had been in that hotel, for that matter. Had he only just arrived in Paris or had he spent the week there? He was much too far gone when the convulsions started; it could have been two hours or two days. Any moments of clarity were agony, mostly filled with disgust at finding he hadn’t been making it to the bathroom and terror that he might die in a hotel room thousands of miles away from his friends and family. He wondered if they’d be told, or if they would just always wonder what had happened to him. Maybe they’d assume suicide. A few more tiny bursts of coherency revealed that he had been clenching or grinding his teeth enough to break a few and that he either tried to get up or had shaken himself off the bed onto the floor. He knew he was going to die then, delirious and shaking and surrounded by his own filth.
Mindset: Given the nature of his death, Nagisa only remembers it in fragments. Mostly he remembers feeling sick in Paris and the morning of puking and diarrhea, then flashes of terror and pain. Being surrounded by death as he was, though, he's more exasperated and frustrated than angry or upset. He is surprised at the nature of his afterlife, and as a curious and adventurous person, he is coping relatively well. Still, the very fresh memories of Haru's death, taking care of Makoto, and then Rei's death have left him a bit more subdued and depressed than he would otherwise be.
G̶̶l̨͡i̵͢t̷c͝͠h̕é͠s̷̷͡: Nagisa's parent's had a habit of making choices for him as a child so anything that takes away his control upsets him. Paris (visions of Paris, maybe the French language itself) makes him uncomfortable now. Also food, something he loved in life, puts him on edge. Nagisa has always been a social person thriving in the company of the people he loves, so long stretches of isolation have a tendency to drain and depress him, and because of the deaths of his friends, possibly cause him to panic.
